Call for Proposals

The Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab (WPHL) is pleased to announce it is now accepting proposals for the Provost-WPHL Humanities Research Grants for 2020-2021. This initiative supports faculty in their research efforts within the humanities disciplines and cognate disciplines with particular emphasis on projects and scholarship that align with the strategic priorities of the WPHL, our university-wide humanities leader and an Emerging Preeminent Program at FIU. This effort underscores FIU’s overall goals as successful research projects in the humanities yield national and international recognition that heightens FIU’s visibility, prestige and ranking. The scholarly productivity of faculty in the humanities is essential for FIU to retain its designation as R1: Doctoral Universities – Highest Research Activity, the highest tier in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

The WPHL welcomes applications for the Provost-WPHL Humanities Research Grant for creative, individual and collaborative humanities projects, especially those mindful of reaching audiences outside the traditional academy. There are two separate programs: 1) individual grants; and 2) collaborative grants. These two programs are intended for regular, full-time faculty in the humanities and cognate disciplines or faculty in any discipline engaged in humanities research. Individual grants are open only to tenured and tenure-track faculty; collaborative grants are open to full-time faculty of all ranks. These funds are to be used for research activities and are not meant as salary replacement. Please note that faculty members may not appear in more than one application, regardless of whether it is an individual or collaborative grant.

To enhance the reach of this research, applicants are expected to translate at least one aspect of the research conducted from the grant into a public-facing work. The possibilities are endless and can range from writing an op-ed piece; delivering a public lecture; creating an open-access digital archive; engaging in or contributing to social media projects; completing performances, art, film, or photography projects, etc. Your application should include a brief description of your plans to share at least one aspect of your research with general publics.

Two Programs

  1. Support for Individual Research Projects: Tenured and Tenure-Track Professors. These awards range from $2,000-$5,000 and are to be used over a twelve-month period. Please indicate your requested amount on the budget sheet. Applications will be evaluated by a Faculty Committee. Please note that 50% of the awards will be granted to Assistant-level applicants and 50% for Associate/Full-level applicants.
  2. Seed Grant Money for Interdisciplinary Collaborative Research in the Humanities: Full-time Faculty from Diverse Ranks. This grant will seed research among members of Interdisciplinary Working Groups to embark on larger grant proposals in the humanities and cognate disciplines. (A “group” must include more than one person.) These interdisciplinary groups might attract outside funding in the future for research and/or cluster hires or interdisciplinary Graduate Degrees. Awards ranging from $3,000-$4,000 are to be used over a twelve-month period. These funds could seed a research group to jumpstart a collaborative project meant to enhance research productivity and creativity across units.

  • Proposal Requirements and Review Process

    Proposal Requirements: 

    • Narrative description of research project of no more than 1500 words that should include:
      • Significance of the project
      • Research design and/or methodology
      • A brief description of plans to share at least one aspect of the research with general publics
      • Work plan for the lifetime of the grant, including measurable outcomes (e.g., publication submissions, plans for submitting to granting agencies, etc).
      • Submissions should be double spaced
    • Budget
    • Biographical sketch or CV (CV should be no longer than 10 pages in length)

    At the conclusion of the granting period, successful applicants must send a report of no more than 500 words.

    Proposal Review Process:

    An ad hoc committee of FIU Humanities faculty will review the proposals with final approval granted by the Provost.

  • Grant Period

    Grant Period

    The grant start date will be the first of the month following receipt of the award announcement. Any remaining balance on the grant will be relinquished at the end of the grant period unless a one-time “no-cost extension” is approved by the WPHL Director prior to the awarded grant’s end date.

    Detailed award set-up instructions will be provided at the time of award notification.

    All funding decisions are final.
