Grants & Collaborations
WPHL has received funding from the Andrew J. Mellon Foundation, Florida Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Jorge M. Perez Family Foundation and Miami Foundation (CreARTE), the Carrie Meek Foundation with the Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance and the Knight Foundation in collaboration with the HCAA and the Green Family Foundation Trust has been a collaborator on grants funded by the Andrew J. Mellon Foundation.
These funds allow us to build community partnerships with local galleries, libraries, archives and museums, engage FIU faculty in discussions about how to incorporate the study of South Florida into their research and pedagogy, explore how Black Beauty embodies resistance, document the local celebration of a transnational festival, record oral histories and make them accessible via a podcast, co-create exhibitions with community members and much more.
Many of our projects have created opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students to gain experience as docents, interviewers and digital archivists.

It wasn't until I met Rebecca and the FIU Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab that I learned that the work Hampton Art Lovers had already been doing in Overtown for years, was in fact 'Public Humanities.' This revelation has led to an enriching partnership and the capacity that a university brings to a small business like ours, allows us to stay small and nimble. That's a blessing!Christopher Norwood, Owner/Curator at The Historic Ward Rooming House
