Beyond Casta: Race and Belonging in Latin America and the Caribbean

...interviews will focus on individuals representing Afro-Latinx, Afro-Latin American, Afro-Caribbean, Indigenous, Jewish, and Middle Eastern identities.

The WPHL is proud to present “Beyond Casta: Race and Belonging in Latin America and the Caribbean,” an oral history and digital humanities project founded by WPHL faculty Ana Menéndez to document the range of experiences of race among Latin American and Caribbean diasporas in Miami and beyond. As part of the initiative, over the next four years, interns will work to collect and process oral histories from different community members. The interviews will focus on individuals representing Afro-Latinx, Afro-Latin American, Afro-Caribbean, Indigenous, Jewish, and Middle Eastern identities. The resulting interviews will be freely accessible in dPanther and dLOC and will be accompanied by relevant public programming.

The project is also generously supported by the FIU Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center, FIU CasaCuba, and Humanities Edge.
