Documenting Goombay and Little Bahamas of Coconut Grove

By Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab

In 2024, Florida International University received an American Folklife Center Community Curation Grant to document the celebration of the Goombay festival in Coconut Grove. Photographs, videos and oral histories captured during Goombay 2024 will be preserved as a permanent digital collection in the Library of Congress.

To celebrate the rich history of not only Goombay but also the communities of Coconut Grove and Coral Gables, the FIU team secured additional funds to create a website that brings together photographs, documentary films and oral histories that are spread across multiple collections in South Florida and beyond. You can see this work in action at littlebahamasmiami.com. Our goal is to continue to grow and develop this site as there are undoubtedly stories that remain to be told.
